1/9/2024 0 Comments Gawker gamergateApparently we're "gender-traitors" with "internalized misogyny" who are too stupid to know what's best for us, or some bull**** like that. Right, and they're even more vicious against women and minorities who disagree. Gamergate wouldn't even exist if game "news" sites had more variety and weren't all copy/pasting what is "acceptable." But when all of them print the same offensive thing at once and actively try to silence criticism, then of course people aren't going to like it and are going to wish that there was more transparency and more varied coverage instead of every site repeating the same thing over and over again. That e-mail group for the journalists showed that certain people like Ben Kuchera were actively dictating to other journalists what they were allowed to print, and insulted the few who raised ethical objections. The main gaming sites are all working together to decide what is allowed to be reported and how it should be reported, and they're actively pressuring other sites to do as they say. Why would they waste money paying for advertising on a site that alienates their audience? It makes more financial sense to shift their advertising to sites that will reach more potential buyers. If they refuse to review a game, then they aren't doing their job and quite frankly they should be called out on that. Everything doesn't need to be gone home (). Not politics, gamers don't give a **** about those things. Opinion on mechanics, story and characters, yes. It is though, the creator of 4chan went to the xoxo fest where Anita Sarkeesian was having a speech of "Listen and Believe" () (sounds like listen and obey) I know it's a common misconception, but I don't know where it's coming from. No, to the best of my knowledge it wasn't them. Excellent book, really, and a corner stone of so much of our modern culture I think having read it is more important than knowing much about Shakespeare. If you think that pointing out common flaws in the depiction of human beings in games is Orwellian, then you probably should read 1984. There's a reason why reviews have texts instead of just numbers (and I kind of wish they got rid of the numbers).Īs for the reviewer refusing to a review a game because he doesn't like it: If that's the biggest problem with game journalism right now, then I think game journalism is doing really well. ![]() And if someone dislikes something about a game, then pretending otherwise won't give you a better review. You can't do an objective review of that, or really any game that has even the slightest hints of trying to tell a story. On the other hand, a game like Stanley Parable only works because it assumes our opinions of what games are supposed to be, and plays with them. A game where I am constantly offended by the story isn't any good at all. How is anyone supposed review a game without taking their opinion into account? That's a big part of whether a game is any good or not. Wasn't the SJW side the one advocating censorship? They stopped discussion on 4chan, reddit and other public community forums by banning users. ![]() This is the result.įor example game journalist refuse to cover a game like Kingdom Come: Deliverance because it doesn't feature minority/LGBT characters like what BioWare does, which is just absurd. That side has been rather orwellion, using things like "if you disagree your a misogynist" to silence opinion. Wasn't the SJW side the one advocating censorship? They stopped discussion on 4chan, reddit and other public community forums by banning users.Īs for games journalism, people of #gamergate and #notyourshield feel that that game journalist job is to report if a game is good or bad. Well, I do see one side advocating censorship here… So many people supporting GamerGate are afraid that "we'll only get to play games pre-approved for political correctness by a left-wing feminazi cabal". But the impression I get is that GamerGate is not about that at all it's about silencing dissenting voices. Of course all games journalism is crap, meant only to entertain and sell ads, not to inform. I don't even like that article all that much, but it is a legitimate expression of opinion, and the message that Intel sends by listening to the people who want that silenced is one that I really hope they don't actually support. Even more of them? I was already very disappointed when Intel removed their ads on Gamasutra over that "Gamers are dead" article.
